BORN OUT OF PASSION

These days, watch enthusiast are spoilt for choice when picking up a timepiece. The range of brands and their selection of timepieces are just mind boggling. But what makes a brand stand out sometimes could be as simple as a story, and here is one we want to share with you here.

In 2014, a bunch of discerning dutch watch enthusiast got together on what is described as the largest Dutch forum community, Horlogeforum.NL, to share what they thought to be the perfect pilot's watch. They soon realised that they were not alone. United by nothing more then passion, this small group of enthusiast decided to stop talking and put their money where their mouth was literally, the result was P1lot One.

The 43mm destro or left handed P1lot One was entirely crafted out of grade 5 titanium. It came equipped with an unsigned manual-wound ETA/Unitas 6498-1 complete with Cotes de Geneve finished bridges. The team chosen to put the project together procured parts directly from the best Swiss suppliers who count amongst their clients venerable brands, like for example the crown was made by the same supplier who made crowns for a very popular big pilot. They also choose to work with some cottage artisans who were known for their dedication to their craft, like Remie Beijer of 7T2straps who makes some of the meanest antique ammo straps. The P1lot One had a sub second dial at 12 which is not what makes it unique. What really made it unique was the collective spirit to pursue ones passion. The production of exactly 52 pieces was spoken for in a week and handed over to the buyers on Teuge International Airport in March 2015.

Fresh from success from P1lot One, some members of the group under founder Hans de Ree got together again for the next project – and that’s when SUBDELTA was born. The first watch built under SUBDELTA is the 42mm Periscope, a one-hand 24-hour dial inspired by the view of a periscope, built for sub-mariners who could not see day or night in their operating environment. Forged from bead-blasted grade 5 titanium and housing a completely customised movement from Russia, the periscope had a sandwich dial cut into two hemispheres, where the upper one represents the nightly hours (18:00 – 06:00) and the lower one are the daytime hours (06:00 – 18:00). Its colors derive from the ones used on the hull of Holland’s Walrus submarine class. It was built for 25 enthusiasts around the globe, referred to as “Commanders”. The 2016 Periscope is individually numbered on the crown and needless to say, was completely sold out.

So what's Subdelta up to next? It's another aviation theme pilot's watch called The Ace. Inspired by aviation cockpit instrument, the fascinating sandwich dial cleverly plays with contrasty cut out lume and black with exceptionally stunning results in ambient light conditions. The use of military inspired stencil numeral eases the timepiece effortlessly into the theme. The ACE is equipped with a re-engineered Swiss Made UNITAS 6497 displaying a large central second hand with hacking feature (stop-seconds). The bridges have Côtes de Genève finishing with perlage on the baseplate. In addition to blued screws and a beautiful swan neck, this original pocket-watch movement sports a unique modification: a signature crooked bridge used to centralize the second hand. The selection of this movement for its quality attests SUBDELTA’s unwavering commitment to remain true to its values.

Considering what went into the making of The Ace, the retail price of €2000 is actually a bargain at that scale of production. It is still available for order at time of print @subdelta.com. but orders will close in exacty 21days on 31Jul 2016. Thereafter, you will have to find they from the secondary market, and given Subdelta's notoriously modest production numbers, it could become rare as hen's teeth.
